About John Stewart UPDATED

With the excellent Van Jensen, Marcelo Maiolo, and Bernard Chang run of Green Lantern Corps behind us, and with John having embarked on a new adventure in Cullen Bunn and Jesus Saiz’s Green Lantern: Lost Army, a brilliant chapter in John Stewart’s history has closed, and a new one begun. As such, some of the pages around GreenLantern.Co are/were in need of updating. One such page is “About John Stewart.” If you have already visited that page, this is a good time to take another look at it, because it’s been brought up to speed with current happenings. If you’ve never seen it before, head on over to it and read about John’s rich history.

“Jensen’s character driven writing and the absolutely stunning visuals from Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo rejuvenated my interest in Green Lantern comic books. Furthermore, Van Jensen updated John’s rather dated origin for the New 52 in the Secret Origins series. Jensen incorporated the best elements of John Stewart from the comics and cartoons, highlighting both his Marine and architect backgrounds. He also made his origin completely independent of Hal Jordan. No longer was John a “backup,” but an important figure of prophecy who the Guardians had been watching all his life.”

Tyrese Gibson Continues to Hint at Green Lantern Role

Tyrese Gibson keeps teasing fans about landing the role of Green Lantern John Stewart in upcoming DC Cinematic Universe films. Once again, he’s taken to his Instagram account to post fan made images of himself and Chris Pine as John Stewart and Hal Jordan respectively.

#TheOath has been taken…..

A photo posted by TYRESE (@tyrese) on

That’s not all! When asked by ET about his involvement with Green Lantern, Gibson had this to say:

“There are certain things I can’t speak on. But I will say, however this works out, it’s definitely the fans’ fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I’ve been a fan of the Green Lantern. I took the oath, and I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about. We’ll just see what happens.

Listen, these muscles are here and they’re ready to be used. There are lot of people, domestically and internationally, who’s got love with your boy. I’m coming into this thing with some fans and some box office receipts behind my name and I say that proudly and humbly. I just think I deserve a shot at suiting up and becoming the Green Lantern.”

It’s looking more and more like the rumors of a movie focusing on Hal Jordan and John Stewart are true. Many people are opposed to the idea of Tyrese playing John Stewart, but I am neutral at this point. We have a few weeks before San Diego Comic-Con. I think we should expect an announcement then.

Stay tuned!

RUMOR: Green Lantern Reboot to Feature John Stewart and Hal Jordan

According to a rumor that was posted on the website Collider there will be more than one cinematic Green Lantern. Rumor has it that the rebooted franchise will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Latino-Review added that they believe Chris Pine may be in talks to play Hal Jordan. There is no mention from either Collider or Latino-Review of who is to play John Stewart. If you’ve been keeping up with Green Lantern movie information, you likely know Tyrese associated himself with the role when he began posting John Stewart images on his Instagram account and even hinted at having a meeting with WB executives about it. Apparently, the Green Lanterns will be unveiled at this coming San Diego Comic-Con.

We’ve heard so much about John Stewart appearing in film that I’m very confident we will see him on the big screen. The inclusion of Hal Jordan has the ring (ho ho) of truth to it, as much as I may not like that. We all know there are high ups at DC Comics who will push very strongly to have Hal Jordan in the film, because the thought of a whole new generation of youngsters growing up thinking Green Lantern is a Black man scares the living daylights out of them.

Though I don’t like the idea of John sharing his spotlight, another part of me feels somewhat neutral at this point. This may just be as good as John Stewart fans are going to get. As to whether I would simply accept this set up or vehemently reject it depends on how it is handled.

First of all, I cannot accept John Stewart being secondary to Hal Jordan, or a side kick. I know there are plenty of Hal Jordan fans who would love to see John get the War Machine treatment, but that will never satisfy John Stewart fans. John Stewart is not a supporting character to Hal Jordan.

Secondly, I’m going to have to see John in the Justice League. I’m not going to wait until 2020 (when the Green Lantern reboot film is scheduled for release) for him to appear. I don’t care what a comic from 1960 says; John Stewart should be the Justice League’s Green Lantern. Hal Jordan does not deserve preferential treatment after that disaster of a film he headlined in 2011. Furthermore, most people’s knowledge of the Justice League comes from the Bruce Timm cartoon shows, which prominently feature John Stewart as the League’s Lantern. John Stewart will have a role to play in Geoff Johns’ “Darkseid War” storyline in the Justice League comic book, and Johns has been thoroughly researching the character, so there is a good chance John will join the League in the comic books, which would be promising.

Lastly, if this rumor winds up being true, I feel John Stewart fans are still being cheated. Had John Stewart headlined a train wreck like the 2011 film, I’m almost certain he would be left out to dry. Yet, DC and WB seem intent on salvaging Hal Jordan by causing John Stewart fans to make a huge compromise.

Hopefully we get some official clarification on this matter soon, so we can finally close this case.

Cullen Bunn has done an interview with Newsarama.Com to shed more light on the new Green Lantern: Lost Army title.

“John’s leadership and command decisions are definitely central to the book, especially for the first arc. We’ll see him making some really tough calls during really stressful and dangerous times. He’ll be a different type of man… and a different type of leader… if he survives this ordeal.”

Expect a review of the first issue from GreenLantern.Co very soon!

Green Lantern: Lost Army #1 Preview

The moment we’ve all been waiting for draws closer and that is the debut issue of Green Lantern: Lost Army. USA Today has the preview of the issue along with information about the series from writer Cullen Bunn. Some excerpts:

“The crux of the first story arc is tracking down where the rest of the Lantern Corps is but also trying to power their rings again in a very hostile corner of the galaxy while also finding a way home. (“Cagey” readers will have figured out where they are by the end of the first issue, Bunn says, and the second issue “will have put a very fine point on it.”)

I was curious on how Bunn was going to handle the reveal of wherever it is the Lanterns are. I was wondering if he would divulge that early on, or if it would be a revelation somewhere down the line. Apparently they’re in a universe that some readers will recognize. That’s interesting.

One thing that has concerned many John Stewart fans is whether or not John will be the main character in this series. The article offers some… vague insight on that.

“While Bunn plans on exploring each of the main cast with a little more depth as the series goes forward, Stewart is the main focus of the initial issues of Lost Army, with flashbacks to his days on the frontlines of war as a soldier.”

John is the focus of the initial stories? I’m certainly open to exploring the other characters, but I am hoping Lost Army is still primarily John Stewart’s story. He is, after all, the leader of the bunch.

I have really enjoyed everything I’ve seen so far from Lost Army including this preview, so despite some concerns, I am still very exciting about this series. Take a look at the USA Today article and preview in the link below, and be sure to pick up issue #1 this Wednesday.
