“Green Lantern Corps” writer Van Jensen has done a segment with USA Today in which he gives readers a low down of the happenings going on with Green Lantern John Stewart right now, and also in the months to come. Of John Stewart, he says:

“He’s heroic in a very traditional sense in that he has a personal code, and he’s very dedicated to protecting the weak and standing up for those who need help and maybe who don’t have a voice. But in addition to that, he’s not just like, ‘I’m gonna go knock heads’ and be a hero through beating people up.”

This is exactly what drew a lot of people to the character in the early ’90s series “Green Lantern: Mosaic.” That story wasn’t about John kicking butt every issue, but rather focused on him being a hero in other ways, such as settling problems with his clever mind and bringing people closer together. Also, John has been a voice for the disenfranchised ever since his 1971 debut. It’s good to know Van Jensen realizes the many great facets of the character, and isn’t just stuck on one of them.

About Fatality, the Star Sapphire love interest of John Stewart, Van Jensen explains:

“There’s this really extreme contradiction inside her. Going forward, we’re going to see more of that with her as she balances these two very distinct sides.”

Interesting. She and John Stewart have a very complex relationship, which I’m sure makes for very fun storytelling potential for Van Jensen to play with.

There’s plenty of interesting content to read, as well as a hefty helping of preview pages. Take a look at the article right here:

Wednesday is right around the corner. Don’t miss out on “Green Lantern Corps” #23. I’m not just saying this because I’m a John Stewart fan, but it really is the best Green Lantern book in many years. It needs to be seen.
