Tyrese Gibson Teases Green Lantern John Stewart Role

on January 24, 2015

Green Lantern Tyrese

There’s more movie news, Lantern fans. Tyrese Gibson took to his Instagram account and shared an image of himself as the Emerald Crusader, Green Lantern John Stewart, along with the caption, “Rumor has it that.” This is currently going viral on the internet, just as the Dwayne Johnson John Stewart rumors did, with over 25,000 likes in a matter of a few hours. So many stars have hinted at John Stewart. Is it safe to assume that he will be the cinematic Green Lantern? It’s looking more and more like that’s the case.

Sound off in the comments section about this latest development!

Whilst I don’t think that Tyrese Gibson is the right choice for John Stewart, the mere fact more and more actors are coming out in full support while no one or at least so very few are coming out in support for any other Lantern, let alone Hal is quite a huge sign that John is making his way to the big screen. If DC ignores it’s fanbase for Hal (which is doubtful since fans were screaming for John to avoid getting killed off and they capitulated quickly), for certain they cannot ignore other high profile voices such as those of many actors or critics or websites like IGN. Without a doubt, I think John has it in the bag though we should obviously shouldn’t stop asking for John. Thanks for the awesome news, it’s a refreshment to see more and more love for him. Now if only we could get more love for Wally or Martian Manhunter.

Agreed. All these rumors must mean SOMETHING. Thanks for posting, Colton.

There is no question about that. I’m reminded of that often even if it seems like most of the internet wants Hal back for more. I’ve seen some of Hal’s hardest fanboys just sling mud at John to try and convince people that he’s just irredeemably terrible. John is far from that, he’s the Amuro Ray of the Green Lantern Corps as far as I can tell and he’s one of the best heroes ever in his own franchise (I could compare the two but I’d rather not) just as John is (and by that, I don’t mean the GL franchise, I mean DC in general). I won’t deny he’s had his lows though that is far from his fault as a character, that is the fault of writers that are either too disinterested in John to write him well or despise him so much they have to tear his success apart. The latter is very unlikely to happen after John’s transition to the big screen or so I would hope. If DC editorial continues after that to tarnish his character, I would think it would be a lot more noticeable and controversial in a negative way. John’s success can’t be contained forever and the more they try, the more his popularity rises.

DC Comics won’t be able to sabotage John anymore, because come June, the whole company will move out to Burbank California, where WB is located. WB will take firmer control of them to prevent stuff like that.

As for the fans, where I’ve been, most people actually want John Stewart. This causes some Hal Jordan fans to become very defensive, but I honestly think they’re in the minority on this one.

This news just made my day, Desh! Thank you so much for posting this! I’m really LOVING that so many cards are coming up John. 😀

Notice he would be the third actor from the Fast franchise to go to DC/WB.

I read an article on “screenrant.com” that spoke about the whole Tyrese Gibson wanting to be John Stewart. While he wouldn’t be my 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice; I’d rather him play the role than for DC/WB not to use the John Stewart character at all. I read some of the postings of people clammouring for Hal Jordan to once again make a appearance. And I had to school them on some observations. With no disrespect to the Hal Jordan character, if I could use an analogy here; he is like that wrestler, boxer or UFC fighter, that fans like, who receives title shot after title shot, and loses to the champ every time he’s booked in the main event. No matter how many opportunities he’s given, he just comes up short. He’s had his solo comic run, he’s been endorsed by the Don King of comics in Geoff Johns, he’s had two animated GL films, multiple appearances in the JL animated films, he’s been in the GL animated series and even his own 2011 film which was originally supposed to launch the DC/WB cinematic universe. But they had to put the torch into the hands of a proven winner by virtue of the “Man of Steel” instead. So if Hal has received so many title shot opportunities and failed to win the title, why should he be granted yet another shot, just to please the minority group fan boys/girls? There are so many other contenders that want a piece of the title; John, Guy, Kyle, Simon, etc. As far as I’m concerned, Hal needs to get in the back of the line. And get this, if it were John Stewart’s character in the 2011 film and not Hal, how much do you want to bet that the fan boys/girls would’ve stated, that’s why the studios should’ve gone with Hal to begin with and would’ve blown up social media in favor to get Hal in the newly launched universe, like how we’re doing with John.

Aside from that, it doesn’t matter what Tyrese posted as it relates to John, just like you Colton & Hudson had alluded to, the more that entertainers endorse and/or mention John Stewart’s name, is the more attention that DC/WB has to pay attention. From Kristian Harloff (panelist on AMC movie Talk), to Grace Randolph (host of Beyond the Trailer), to random article writers of various webpages, to Desh on this site, to bloggers and posters like us, all the way up to Dwayne Johnson stating in a tweet that John Stewart could totally whoop Superman’s a**, to Idris Elba in an interview stating that he’d be interested if offered the role, and now Tyrese wanting to be cast as said character; the buzz has turned into a blazing fire that Hal Jordan fans cannot put out, and DC/WB could no longer ignore this. The GL 2020 movie will be a “reboot”, not a “re-imagining ” or “remake”, therefore by definition the studios has to go as far away from anything relating to that movie as possible, and that includes Hal Jordan. It makes me wonder though, if the Hollywood actors know something that we don’t know. If anyone would have the inside scoop on who DC/WB is going to go with, it sure would be the actors. And thus far more than one actor has mentioned John Stewart’s name in some form or fashion. A co-incidence…I think not!

I don’t think this is just Tyrese saying he wants to play John Stewart, it’s supposed to lead us to believe that he IS playing John Stewart. I think all these actors have mentioned the role because they knew WB was looking to cast that character. It’s looking very obvious to me at this point that.

This is good news! I couldn’t be more excited about this!
