UPDATE! Tyrese Gibson Continues to Hint at Green Lantern Role

on January 25, 2015

Tyrese Gibson has once again taken to his Instagram account to post a rendering of himself as Green Lantern John Stewart. His similar post yesterday really got the rumor mill churning, and he’s not letting up. Along with the image, he had this to say:

“Loving this energy….. Shout to @_raphael_leite_ Idris fall back I got this! “In the brightest day, in the blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight. Let all who worship evil’s might, Beware of the power of Green Lantern’s light!””

Green Lantern remains the only Justice League member not revealed as cast for the upcoming Justice League film. Warner Bros. has been very hush mouthed about the Emerald Crusader, a crucial member of the League, but things can’t stay secret forever. With Idris Elba, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Chadwick Boseman, and now Tyrese directly referencing John Stewart, it’s looking like he will be the cinematic Green Lantern, which would make a lot of sense, as John Stewart offers a clean platform removed from the failed 2011 Green Lantern film, while giving general audiences a face many among them know and have missed, due to his prominent role in the Bruce Timm Justice League and Justice League Unlimited shows.

Keep an eye on GreenLantern.Co for the latest regarding John Stewart movie news.

Tyrese has been posting loads of John Stewart content on his Instagram, so I suggest fans keep an eye on it, which can be found here. Of special note, is a meeting Tyrese had with DC Comics Publisher Jim Lee. This leads me to believe that, at the very least, Tyrese has met with WB officials to discuss playing Green Lantern. Perhaps he’s already been cast but cannot announce it. Along with the above picture, he had this to say.

“It’s not everyday you get to go to someone on the level of Jim Lee aka @JimLeeArt home and watch him design and sketch a comic book cover…

Oa, by the way

Hey, guess what. Tyrese isn’t the only person after the John Stewart role. According to the large Twitter acount Superhero Feed, Michael Jai White has reportedly also said he’s trying to be cast for the role.

“MICHAEL JAI WHITE says he “loves DC” and is looking into playing GREEN LANTERN!”

Superhero Feed Tweet

Two big stars talking about playing John Stewart on the same day? Whatever could this mean? What it looks like is that WB is right now looking into casting for that character!

Apparently not everyone is happy with this development as usual. I’m disappointed though with John Campea and how he’s taking the news. Apparently expressing support for a character is the same as wanting attention. Ugh. I can’t tell you how upset I am at the moment.

    • Desh Derringer says:

John Campea is a total Hal Jordan fan. Many of them get very defensive and resort to denial and spite at the prospect of WB using John Stewart instead of Hal Jordan, despite that just being the logical thing to do in nearly everyone else’s eyes, because that would shatter their reality of Hal Jordan being the be-all Green Lantern. Even though Hal Jordan is not that and has not been that since 1994 when he died and Kyle Rayner took over his comic book for 10 years and John Stewart was featured in a cartoon that was more successful than anything Jordan has ever been a part of, which shaped millions of people’s perception of Green Lantern.

Regarding those types of Hal Jordan fans… They’re just going to have to be casualties, for lack of a better term. You can’t make an omelet without cracking a few eggs, and for things to advance, WB should not be hindered by some loud, angry Hal Jordan fans who are ultimately inconsequential. I say that because they complained about John being used in JL/JLU, yet that didn’t cause a dent in those shows’ success, and they weren’t enough to save Hal Jordan’s movie and cartoon from failing. Yes, they will complain and loudly, but so be it. I am prepared for that.

This may seem like a spiteful post, but I think some just need to get used to the idea that.

      • Clyde says:

Desh, not only am I with you on your posted statement, but I’m so glad that Hal was featured as the main Lantern and “the one” to start the cinematic universe. Its like a blessing in disguise, because if it was for poor writing, directing and overall direction, it could have easily have been John up there on the big screen and those Hal Jordan fans would’ve blown up social media stating that he should’ve been the one from the beginning not some 3rd rate back up. That’s exactly their thought process, and yet they feel that even with all those chances that Hal still should be given more. I would’ve agreed with those Hal fans if no other Lantern was created but him. Hey Desh I don’t see Hank Pym (Antman) fanboys up in arms about the studios by passing him and having Scott Lang as the cinematic universe’s first appearance of Antman.

        • Desh Derringer says:

John has never been a part of a failed project. All his comic book runs have been successful, JL/JLU was a huge success, the toylines he was a part of sold so well they went on years and years after the cartoon show stopped airing new episodes. Yes, it’s great that Nick Jones Jr.’s scenes as John were cut out, as weird as it is to say. It’s better that John have absolutely nothing to do with that movie whatsoever.

    • Steve Rogers says:

I never heard of John Campea. Reading that childish comment of his, I wouldn’t surprised that’s going through Geoff Johns head right now.

Someone always have to get in the way when something positive breaks loose. I’m seriously getting tired of Hal Jordan fanboys.

      • Clyde says:

Hey Steve, John Campea is the host of “AMC movie talk” Mon-Fri and on weekends he does “AMC Mail Bag”. You can see it on “Youtube”. Its a show that gives the movie going audience an insight about films. Honestly, Steve I happen to like John Campea’s opinions except when it comes down to the subject of the Green Lantern. But otherwise he’s on point.

    • Clyde says:

Hey Colton, you watch AMC movie talk also. Small world. But then again with the internet connecting the planet, the world has become a lot smaller than it was within our early lifetime. I respect John Campea’s opinions. He’s very good at what he does. I agree with 98% of his thought process with that 2% disagreement as it relates to Green Lantern. You see unlike Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg and Shazam whose identities is singular…Green Lantern’s identity is plural. There are a corps of Lanterns. So as long as Hal Jordan is one of many, I will never see him as THE Green Lantern. If anyone deserves that claim, it should be the 1st ever created in Alan Scott. According to the GL history books the ring only choose Hal based on proximity of him being closer than Guy, so that tells me how great could Hal be if the ring couldn’t decide between him and Guy and chose him because he was closer. That’s laughable.

Then when you have the CCO Geoff Johns having a bias opinion in favor of his favorite character, and force feeding him to the public, of course Hal is going to have the best stories and more history, and more opportunities. However even with the little opportunities that John Stewart did have, the writers and artists helped him make the most of it. And thanks to Bruce Timm, John Stewart is now on his way to the biggest title shot we could ever imagine possible.

      • Colton Williams says:

Honestly, I liked John Campea the least on his panel. I always preferred Jon Schnepp to him since Schnepp seems to be the most reasonable and he’s almost always spot on. It seems like he’s the most willing to admit that even as a Hal fan, some other Lantern needs to take up where Hal failed and the most likely candidate is none other than John Stewart. Campea is extremely reluctant to admit that and holds out hope for Hal to pull through from what I understand. I can understand that viewpoint if he didn’t act like such an ass when he wrote that. My respect for Campea went way down after he wrote that. Can you imagine if someone did that for Guy or Kyle? It’d be faint praise at least but I have heavy doubts he would say that it’s for attention. And if it were Hal? He’d be all over it and be cheering up an down. But when it’s John? Oh he’s just trying to get attention. That’s what really bothers me about Campea’s statement. It’s one thing to be a Hal fan (which I am) but it’s another to try and deny any success that John is having which he’s done before whenever the subject of John comes up.

  2. Clyde says:

I wanted to address Steve and Colton on this one matter. Although John Campea has his opinions of which GL should be used, his regular weekly panelist Kristian Harloff is a John Stewart supporter. With that said, as I sit back and type this post, I think to myself. I feel sort of bad concerning these Hal Jordan lovers…and here’s why. They like many of the old school minded generation is still stuck on the status quo. There are still people who can’t believe that gays have as much rights as they do, they can’t believe that a black man was not only elected into the office of the presidency not just once, but a historic twice (regardless of one’s opinion of whether or not they like Obama), they still have a hard time accepting that women is earning favorable recognition in the workforce and lastly, they have a hard time believing that a minority superhero could be just as impactful as the cast of Caucasian heroes that were displayed in comics all these years.

As Desh stated in an earlier post. It’s no coincidence that several different actors has referenced John Stewart. Why would different actors address publicly who they’d like to play in the DCCU especially calling out the name of John Stewart if the DC/WB weren’t going to have him featured. Because if they were going to use another character other than John, it would make Dwayne Johnson, Michael Jai White, Tyrese Gibson, & Idris Elba look like fools, and these men are anything but that. Guys if I’m not dreaming and this is in fact true that the studios is currently casting or has already casted John and will announce it at comic con 2015, then not only would we have witnessed a black pres of the USA in our lifetime, but also to see a credible (A) list top tier minority hero; not a token black guy supporting character in “Cyborg”. This would the biggest move since the Blade movies.

  4. Hudson Faber says:

Hey, Desh! I showed this to you a while back and just found a way to share it. Enjoy!

  5. Hudson Faber says:

John is such an important character for in Black History. I’d love to see your thoughts on John in that context, Desh. If you have the time, that is.

  6. Guest says:

Zeeguy showed up (again) and is spewing ignorance (again).

If you get a moment, I’d love to see you bring the fire.

    • Desh Derringer says:

I looked over the post I think you’re alluding to. That’s his opinion and he’s entitled to it. But feel free to let us know if he says anything too ridiculous.

  7. Clyde says:

Hey guys I just wanted to give you all an update. Steve posted for us to go to to vote for our favorite character for Feb 2015’s character of the month. Black Panther is in the lead, but he doesn’t need the win, he doesn’t need the push, he’s already getting his solo movie. However John Stewart still needs that extra push to solidify himself well above Hal. So what I’ve been doing thus far is to send a text message to everyone in my phone to vote and to tell their people. In addition I told them to vote on multiple computers. I have voted on my laptop, my cell phone and next I’m going to hit up as many local libraries so I could use every computer that they have to vote. We need to close this gap from 2nd place to 1st place. Voting ends This coming Friday Jan 30th 2015. So if you all haven’t already done so…let’s get on the ball. If you won’t do it for me, or yourself…do it for the corps. lol

  8. Hudson Faber says:

Update: We are only 4 percentage points away from first–keep it up!

    Vote here:…5/1100-151108/

  9. Hudson Faber says:

Desh, please include this information in your next big post:

John Stewart is TIED with Black Panther for first place in Comicvine’s Character of the month poll, which means we’ve been bringing in a lot of votes.

    Vote here:

If you’re seeing this for the first time, go vote for John! Polling closes Friday at 6:00am ET. If you’ve already voted, keep telling your friends and family to vote for John.

    Remember, WE CAN DO THIS.

Also, don’t be shy about tweeting this to actors like Idris Elba, Tyrese, Dwayne Johnson, or Michael Jai White. Those are all guys who have stated that they have an interest in the role or the character. A retweet from one of them could be HUGE for us.

And don’t stop bringing votes in until Friday morning. Even if we get a lead, we have to maintain it. The more we tweet it, the more likely they are to see interest and tweet it themselves.

Finally, please show your support in the Comicvine comments!

  10. Hudson Faber says:

Okay, someone other than me needs to comments at Zeeguy:

Don’t forget to mention John outselling every other Black character, pretty much every lantern, Cyborg’s minstrel side, and the high likelihood of John’s relaunch ->

  11. Steve Rogers says:

Hey Desh, I’m sorry to say this, but there’s a couple of people talking Sh** about you on ComicVine in the character of the month comments and it’s really pissing me off. And it’s sad that people on that site is downplaying John Stewart just because he’s winning in the polls.

And I appreciate all of you guys voting for John Stewart. And ignore the those meaningful comments. Don’t let that put you down.

    • Hudson Faber says:

Agreed, Steve. That’s why if anyone hasn’t commented, you need to continue to show your support of John in the comments. Some people just really refuse to believe that John is so liked. We all saw how that turned out when someone at DC tried to kill John off. This poll is a chance to eradicate that notion. Stay strong, and let’s keep our chins up!

    • Desh Derringer says:

I appreciate the heads up, but I really just don’t have the time to go back and forth with every numbskull Hal Jordan fan. I have to take care of the site, write articles, report news, and things like that, which I feel are more important than arguing with spiteful stubborn people who will never change. I might pitch in when/if time allows, though.

The way I see it, though, at this point, WB is going to do what they’re going to do where Green Lantern is concerned. That’s all decided by now, and it will come out soon and people are just going to have to accept whatever it is… or not. Those people can leave, though I’m sure they’ll complain loudly as well.

  12. Desh Derringer says:

I would be careful about saying things like that. Remember, people could easily come here and read that.

  13. Desh Derringer says:

I really appreciate the passion and enthusiasm. There is a lot of passion surrounding John Stewart’s character right now. It’s really encouraging. Just try to be careful what you say in the comments over here, because people from ComicVine can easily come here and read them.

  14. Hudson Faber says:

Hey, guys and girls! The ComicVine poll is only up for one more hour. John looks like the clear victor. We’ve really banded together and done something awesome. Give yourselves a pat on the back. Also, please show your support in the comments!…5/1100-151108/

  15. Desh Derringer says:

Congratulations on helping John win the poll, everyone. John Stewart truly has a great community of fans.

  16. Steve Rogers says:

Next week is going to be a wonderful month for us John Stewart fans. All of you guys done an awesome job voting for John Stewart. I am pleased and give many thanks to you all for voting for him. And honestly, I didn’t expect for John Stewart to win (I thought he was going to be in 2nd place behind Black Panther), but this shows John has a large fan base and Hal fanboys don’t like that, because of fear on rivalry, which is why some Hal fans suggest that John should be an indigo lantern. So their favorite character can be known as the ONLY GREEN LANTERN (and Simon Baz is kind of like fodder anyways). But that’s not going to happen.

    Everyone celebrate!!! *pops champagne*
