The End of Green Lantern Corps – March 2015 Solicit

on December 15, 2014

I have some surprising news to report, Lantern fans. DC Comics has released its March 2015 solicits, which reveal that Green Lantern Corps #40 will be the final issue of Green Lantern Corps. I’m really not sure what to make of this. This title has been selling well above cancellation levels, so this leads me to believe a relaunch of some sort is under way. Green Lantern: New Guardians and Red Lanterns are also being cancelled, but I actually suspected those might be. But Green Lantern Corps!? That comes as quite a shock, especially since the Sinestro title, which Green Lantern Corps regularly outsells, is continuing.

I can only hope that DC has bigger things planned for John Stewart. I’m really hoping that we get something new that features him as a solo star again, akin to the current GLC run. He’s had such great development under Van Jensen, Bernard Chang, and Marcelo Maiolo. I’d hate to see him lumped into some kind of ensemble title. John Stewart has proven to be a PoC character that can successfully hold his own, and probably the only one DC has. Here’s hoping DC recognizes that and continues to feature him as the primary lead in an upcoming Green Lantern title.

Here’s the solicit with the cover art:

Green Lantern Corps #40 Solicit

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #40
Written by VAN JENSEN
Art and cover by BERNARD CHANG
MOVIE POSTER Variant cover by TONY HARRIS
On sale MARCH 11 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T • FINAL ISSUE
John Stewart comes face to face with the failure that has haunted and defined him for years – the destruction of the planet Xanshi. Will he find salvation as history threatens to repeat itself? Plus, a moment that will forever alter the course of the Corps in a final issue that had to be extra-sized!

It sounds like Van Jensen is finally going to put a nail in the coffin to John’s Xanshi phantoms, and in an extra-sized issue! I’m looking forward to it.

This is an odd time. I’m not sure whether to feel excited or… something else. I do feel a bit of trepidation right now. If DC chooses to launch a new John Stewart book, at the very least, I really hope they keep Van Jensen as the writer. He’s displayed a genuine care and mastery of the character that very few comic writers have.

I’m confident there will be plenty of news coming in. Keep your eyes on GreenLantern.Co to stay up to date.

Oa, by the way

DC Comics continues its fun variant cover themes. The latest one is movie posters. This coming March, Green Lantern Corps does a tribute to the classic movie Forbidden Planet. Take a look at the fun cover below.

That drops my DC pull list to 0. I have no idea what they plan to do with john stewart, the corps or the poster boy hal, but considering all the poor creative decisions DC has made the past few years, I don’t feel good about this at all. I really feel like van Jensen had something going with the corps.

I don’t think it has much to do with sales, considering GL overall is middle of the pack. not sure what else to say, it’s a shocker really

    • Steve Rogers

Same here, man. I’m not buying no more DC books, just Marvel. Marvel really knows how to treat their characters.

If they’re pushing John to become a main GL or being a lead character in a book, then I’ll buy DC comics again. Oh, and screw Geoff Johns.

  • Steve Rogers

Desh, what’s your thoughts about the Green Lantern solicit? “It’s the ultimate betrayal! But what could make Hal Jordan turn on the Templar Guardians and the Corps? Setting the stage for a status quo change that will impact all the Green Lantern titles!”

It seems like Hal is turning against the guardians and even the corps. There’s some people out there predicting that John may be heading onto the main GL title. And looking at the Green Lantern Corps solicit, that whole Xanshi tragedy that hurt John for ages may be going away and changing his character (remember that Van Jensen said next year there’s going to be a change for John Stewart forever) in a good way. Who knows, this can be a set up for a higher status quo for John by DC. So I’ll remain a little optimistic for now.

    • Desh Derringer

I know all of this looks ominous at this point, but I’m actually really excited for John Stewart right now. I think DC will move him to bigger things. I think the Van Jensen GLC run was prepping him, getting rid of all the negative baggage that’s hampered the character. Once that’s complete, I believe DC will to launch John Stewart into something big, which will either be a new series, or the lead role in Green Lantern.

As for Hal Jordan… I don’t know what will become of him, but I can’t see someone who is an enemy of the Green Lantern Corps remaining “the main” Green Lantern. We’ll see…

      • sandtrap12

True, I think Kyle might be in the most trouble here. No idea what the plans are for baz or that new girl, but knowing johns his charcters aren’t just going away.

John and maybe to a lesser extent sinestro look to be the winners here. We’ll see

        • Desh Derringer

I think Baz and Jessica Cruz will be in Johns’ Justice League for the time being. As for Kyle… I can’t see DC returning him to being a Green Lantern. Same with Guy. I don’t have any clue what will happen to them.

  • bpGL

With Hal Jordan going back to the Justice League, do you think John will become the new corps leader?

    • Desh Derringer

That’s a good question. I actually don’t think Hal Jordan will be going back to the League. Geoff Johns said that Green Lantern will come back for the “Darkseid War,” but I don’t think it will be Hal Jordan. I think Geoff Johns was being intentionally misleading. Take a look at this page from Green Lantern: Futures End #1:

      https://greenlantern.co/misc/darkseid-war.jpg

That issue takes place five years into the future. Hal Jordan talks about being upset because he missed a war that was on Earth, which involved the whole planet. I think it’s pretty clear that he is talking about the upcoming “Darkseid War.” I believe that Simon Baz will be the Green Lantern in Johns’ “Darkseid War” story.

Do I think John will become leader of the Corps? Yes and no. There have been many things suggesting that in the current stories. However, now that the Guardians are back, I think they will retake their administrative role of the Green Lantern Corps. Still, I think John will be honored in some fashion. He may lead all the Lanterns in their final battle against the New Gods.

Thanks a lot for reading and posting.

I’m really surprised about GLC and Red Lanterns because those 2 books have been really interesting in terms of story and characters. GL: New Guardians didn’t vibe with me so that doesn’t come as a surprise. It would not be wise for DC to go back to Hal being the only Lantern with a comic and the others are background props. I hope this new direction meshes well with John and Guy, seeing how they became the most developed characters in these books.

    • Desh Derringer

I don’t think they’ll go back to Hal Jordan as the only Lantern. The recent solicitations mention him betraying the Corps. Of course, the solicits are often exaggerated, but they also mention a massive status quo shift, so something big is likely to happen. It’s really too early to tell how this shake up with impact the various Green Lantern characters. I am optimistic for John, though.

  • Clyde

Hey guys I’m back. I’ve been gone for awhile, but I have been keeping up with Desh’s postings. I’ve been busy later, so in my spare time I’ve been able to read but not really comment…that is until now. I have heard that DC is shaking things up and is discontinuing the publications of I believe somewhere around the number of 13-16 comics with the GL corps being one of them. How do I feel about that…well good and bad. The bad because we all will miss John Stewart taking lead of the corps. and having a larger story told. And the reason I feel good, is for a more selfish reason. Hopefully this will open up the window of opportunity for John to shine without the other Lanterns trying to steal his spotlight. I’m sure Hal Jordan knows all about that. Its amazing how many Hal Jordan fans disregard John and refer to him as boring and yet the support for him is limitless. Just recently on the Thursday Dec 18th, 2014 broadcast episode of “AMC movie talk” on Youtube…one of the panelists “Kristian Harloff” had endorsed actor Idris Elba to play John Stewart. If anyone wants to hear his very brief comments then go to that episode and start the view from 28mins / 30secs and it ends approx at 30mins / 10 secs. This is just further evidence to support Desh’s claim that while we may have concerns about the future of John Stewart, the DC / Warner Bros. execs are well aware of the widespread support of one John Stewart.

    • Desh Derringer

I agree with you Clyde in thinking that this will finally be the moment WB overtly throws their support behind John Stewart.

Thanks for posting that. That was a good video. I disagree about keeping the old Green Lantern movie in continuity. Everything about that should be washed away. Of course, I really agree with the sentiment about using John Stewart. It’s up building to see that so many others agree with us.

Ok, now my pull list is down to Walking Dead and Conan.
I can live with that and waiting for trades of Marvel’s $3.99 properties.
