UPDATE! Is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Going to Play Green Lantern John Stewart?

on January 1, 2014

Happy New Year, Lantern fans! And what a way to start off the new year. DC Cinematic Universe news and rumors have been pouring in over the last couple days, and Green Lantern John Stewart is right in the center of it all. As was reported last update, nukethefridge.com claims Denzel Washington is being courted by Warner Bros. for the role of Green Lantern John Stewart in the Man of Steel sequel that will begin shooting in February. Not long after, the story went viral and now another source, aceshowbiz.com, is claiming the same thing. While many are excited about that, some have criticized the notion of Denzel Washington assuming the role because of the veteran actor’s advancing age.

Via Twitter, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has confirmed that he’s locked up a DC Comics related role. With all the recent Green Lantern news circulating around the internet, naturally, many fans are speculating that the role is for the Emerald Crusader.

If we stop and think about that for a minute, it makes sense. Over the years, fans have pegged The Rock as the perfect person to play Black Adam. Personally, I can’t see the Shazam villain appearing in any upcoming movie, especially since recent news articles have confirmed there are no cinematic plans for Shazam. The Rock, who is one of the biggest actors today, is probably not going to play the brooding and green Martian Manhunter, and he’s too old to play Cyborg, and I highly doubt he would accept that role anyway. Also, no one wants to see The Rock as some CG’d freak like Doomsday. People will want to see him in a suit with his muscles bulging. With all the recent headlines about Green Lantern John Stewart, there is a decent chance the Rock has signed on to play as the Marine turned intergalactic police officer.

While the Rock may not be my first choice, I think this would be a great move. The Rock is box office gold, and what better way to repair the damaged name of Green Lantern than with someone as undeniable as The Rock. If he becomes Green Lantern, Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan and the 2011 Green Lantern movie disaster will become a small, fading, wretched memory in the back of audiences’ subconscious.

I would still love to see Idris Elba, but the idea of using The Rock is intriguing, something I’m not against, and a brilliant move for Warner Bros.

UPDATE!

The Rock has specifically posted about John Stewart on his Instagram account. A big thanks to Hudson Faber for picking up on this.

What could this mean? The Rock, out of nowhere, gives a shout out to Green Lantern John Stewart. If you ask me, judging by this and other recent events, I think we’ve got our next Green Lantern. Stay tuned, folks.

UPDATE!

The news keeps coming in. Writer Peter Georgiou of the website Thinkmcflythink has heard through the grapevine that The Rock is having discussions with WB regarding the role of Green Lantern John Stewart.

He addresses the question of what this means for the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern from the previous Green Lantern film:

At the very least, we have good reason to believe WB is looking for an actor to play John Stewart. More news as it happens!

As much as I like Dwayne Johnson (been a fan of his since he was a wrestler), I don’t think he’s right for the role of John Stewart. He doesn’t look much like him and I always felt that Johnson’s strengths as an actor are his loud personality and his sense of humor. Stewart to me is a more serious and reserved character and I don’t know if Johnson can pull that off. I don’t know why DC didn’t try to get Idris Elba or Chiwetel Ejiofor or are they waiting for the GL film for that one?

Is the Tattooed Man from vol. 4 still around? I could see Rock playing him though the best role for him would be Black Adam. When was the last time Rock played a villain?
