Green Lantern Corps #40 Preview

on March 6, 2015

The final issue of Green Lantern Corps is nearly upon us. The preview is up at Mancave Daily, and what a preview it is! There are huge revelations about John Stewart within the small amount of pages presented there. Van Jensen retcons the Xanshi incident from Cosmic Odyssey and tells of how it happened in the New 52 continuity. This version paints John Stewart in a much better light. What’s more, Katma Tui appears! This issue has already won me over.

Don’t miss this one, Lantern fans. Check out the preview below:
‘Green Lantern Corps’ #40 Ends with a Bang

Oa, by the way

In case you didn’t know, as of Green Lantern #40, which released on March 4, Hal Jordan is no longer a Green Lantern and is wanted by the Corps. In this period when WB is gearing up for their cinematic universe, and as we’re awaiting an announcement of Green Lantern in said universe, they make it so Hal Jordan is no longer Green Lantern in the comics. To me, this is further reason to believe that WB is getting behind John Stewart. I just thought this was worth mentioning, as this development likely means something for John Stewart’s position in the DC Universe, and even cinematic universe.

The preview is awesome! I love that Jensen is cleaning house in the best way possible before his exit. Best run in the Green Lantern universe ever, in my opinion.

Also, I really hope WB releases the Green Lantern casting announcement soon since the role has apparently been cast already.

That is SO awesome. Apparently a longer trailer is due out next month. Get pumped!

Guys I just had a fantasy visual in my mind that I would like to share with you. Okay so use your imagination and pretend that you’re at the 2015 San Diego Comic Book Convention. You and the many audience members are awaiting an announcement from DC/WB when all of a sudden the lights go out and everyone in the room is wondering what’s going on. A security staff member then says to the crowd “everyone please remain calm as we find out the source of the power outage”. The audience starts chatting loudly while pulling out their cell phones for lighting. Then all of a sudden everyone’s attention is directed towards the stage as two of the comic con staff roll out a huge object roughly 8 feet tall in height and it’s width is like the average door. Green lights begin to flicker from this large object. The flickering lights remind you of being in a nightclub. Then you hear a voice loudly say into a microphone…”in brightest day…in blackest night…no evil shall escape my sight…let those who worship evils might…beware my power…GREEN LANTERN’S LIGHT!” Then all of a sudden a huge green beam of light comes from the large 8 foot tall object and the Green Lantern symbol appears on the large screen projector on the stage. The lights in the room come back on and a person walks across the stage smiling and waving at the audience while sporting a GL ring and green contact lenses. The 8 foot tall object that everyone notices is a green lantern power battery. The crowd goes wild to see that this is the actor who will be playing Green Lantern as he walks off the stage and director Zack Snyder then comes out and sits down at the table to discuss what everyone saw and to answer questions.

So what do you guys think about a John Stewart announcement made in that fashion?

    • Desh Derringer

It sounds epic, but honestly, I’m hoping we get confirmation of John Stewart before Comic-Con. On the other hand, after this long wait and internet war we had to go through, maybe he does deserve a huge show stopping moment like that.

      • Clyde

I’m glad you liked that concept. It has been a tiresome process to have to constantly defend John Stewart from those who spread false statements about him and belittle his character at every turn. People bringing up Hal Jordan in subjects that have nothing to do with him, like John Stewart’s origins, Van Jensen’s surprise article and more. Never can John get any shine without some Hal Jordan lacky trying his best to ruin the moment. But coming to John’s defense is worth the time for me. Because we John supporters put so much time and effort into showing people a positive spin to his character, it’s quite justified Desh, that you and several others would want an announcement asap. So that we can move onto the next phase, which would be the hate comments coming from disapproving Hal fans (more so than we’re getting now). But I think about my fantasy, and think that this is a fitting climax to all we’ve worked for. That would send a message to the masses that the studios are behind John all the way. He would have an introduction like none other, which not even the trinity received at last year’s event. And it would also show the world that this announcement was their main event showcase. But in any case the anticipation is like a child waiting for Christmas to open their gifts…absolute torture, lol.

        • Desh Derringer

The worst part is certainly the Hal Jordan fans. I just want to shut them up as soon as possible. Not that they’ll actually shut up if John is announced, but they’ll at least have to face reality. They get worse and worse as time goes on, and it’s near the point where I can’t see any redeemable quality in them.

          • Steve Rogers

I agree. They’re definitely getting worse. I think they’re raging hard now, because they fear that John may be the DCCU lantern. So yea, they’re nervous.

          • Clyde

It’s not just them trying to argue why Hal should be the main focal point of the corps. it’s gotten so bad that they are trying to argue that Hal Jordan is the GL corps. and without him they cannot function or exist.

          • Desh Derringer

Well, they at least try to argue that a Green Lantern story isn’t worth having without Hal Jordan, especially a movie, in which case, I strongly disagree. They argue that John Stewart can’t hold down a movie, when it is actually Hal Jordan who can’t hold down a movie, as evidenced by the 2011 film. They also go into attack mode whenever John Stewart is brought up.

This is why it’s so important for us to have a place like this where we can have discussions without Hal Jordan fans being around to pollute them. I know that sounds like segregation, but the fact of the matter is-Green Lantern or not-we’re just not fans of the same things, we don’t want the same things, we don’t have the same perspectives, and we’re more or less diametrically opposed to each other.

There can’t be any peaceful coexisting with them, unless one side is willing to hold its tongue and accept being left out, which was John Stewart fans for so long. And I’m just not willing to accept that anymore. Not after that multimillion dollar flop film with Hal Jordan and the other failed projects. It’s John Stewart’s time.

And I don’t think solving the problem is to have both of them, because that’s still not fair to us, the John Stewart fans. Because where was John Stewart in the 2011 film, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, the numerous DTV movies DC put out, and so on. I think forcing us to watch Hal Jordan with John Stewart will not help the situation. Preferably, I’d like to not have to watch that character to see John Stewart. I want for John to have his own stuff that is undeniably HIS.

          • Hudson Faber

These Hal fans are so annoying: http://www.comicvine.com/forums/gen-discussion-1/why-do-people-love-john-stewart-so-much-1651194/

          • Desh Derringer

It’s so sad how parts of the fandom responds to people being fans of a Black character. It goes to show we, sadly, still have some ways to go.

          • Hudson Faber

True. It’s like they are implicitly saying that only white characters deserve to be liked. They totally refuse to acknowledge all the great stuff about John.

          • Desh Derringer

And they blame people for liking John only “because he’s Black,” which yeah, disregards everything he’s ever done, but also casts shame on something that should actually be celebrated: a strong, honorable, idealized Black character in comics. As if wanting to see something that someone may identify with, or see something different that casts other types of people in a favorable light is wrong.

I posted those romance videos as not only a tribute to our hero, but to show further evidence that John is far from the claims of the few who call John, boring, dull, uninteresting and whatever adjective that they could come up with to further their false claims. If John was any of those things he wouldn’t have bagged not one but two women on the same team. You go stud! If he were that boring, funny man Flash wouldn’t have taken to him. If he were that lame, his voice would go unheard even among the smartest hero in their unit (Batman). If he were any of what the minority of people say that he is, why would John’s legacy grow even more now after a decade has past since his presence in the animated series? Not even his comic book presence gave him so much of a push in the hearts and minds of the masses. And now multiple social media outlets are asking for him to be on the big screen. And yet some wonder how he became COTM and find it hard to fathom how he’s even popular. They talk about the animated series as if it shouldn’t have taken place all because Hal wasn’t used. They talk about his creation as being an affirmative action insertion. And his inclusion in the animated series to fulfill an invisible quota. And whether that be true, false or half and half, John’s character made the most he had with the little opportunity that he was given, and has made a positive impact both along racial lines as well as a representative of the GL corps. and still there are those who try so hard to diminish every last one of his accomplishments as if we’re all a fluke and he shouldn’t have ever been created to begin with.

Desh, at first I thought that it were possible for all GL fans to get the lanterns that they want on the big screen together. But I can see that isn’t enough for the Hal Jordan fans. They want to see John subservient to Hal’s every beacon call. They want him as a sidekick and a rookie as compared to Hal. They want him to be in Hal’s shadow. Basically they want John’s role in the DCCU to be exactly the same as Geoff Johns’ GL run. The good thing is that the movie studios don’t give two rats asses about staying true to the comics source material both on the DC and Marvel side. I thought that we could all come to a happy medium, as all GL fans could get what we want, but they want more than just Hal appearing on screen, they either don’t want John in it at all, or they want him to look like he’s Kunta Kinte. Well, enough is enough I supported Hal to get another chance to be on big screen later on down the line, but now I don’t want to see him at all. I’ll only support a casting of Guy &/or Kyle.

    • Desh Derringer

What Hal Jordan fans want and what we want just don’t coincide. It sounds like a fun, happy, nice sentiment to say everyone can get what they want, but it just isn’t true. I know what Hal Jordan fans want from John Stewart, and it’s ultimately for John to not be there at all, or for him to be Beta to Hal Jordan’s Alpha. Some say Jordan should be introduced first and John can come in later. That will ensure that John is subservient to Hal Jordan. I don’t want to see that. I want John as the main Green Lantern like he is in the DCAU.

As for Hal Jordan’s fans, well, they had their chance with the 2011 film and Animated Series. Those didn’t go over well. Those are the breaks I guess. I think it’s time for WB to move on.

And no, John Stewart is not boring at all. In my opinion, he has the most captivating superhero romance of all time with Hawkgirl. That’s not something boring characters have.

So I was on “comicvine” looking at the comments and saw this that I found funny. “Sethysquare” writes: “Why is comicvine trying to alienate Hal Jordan fans?”. So “Mysoulz” writes in response: “How is comicvine alienating Hal fans? John was COTM last month, which is why he’s been getting lots of attention at the time. This article was supposed to be posted on that month, but came in late.”

Once again this shows the high level of selfishness and ego-centrism. The word delusional is a mild understatement. If a story were written where we featured all the Earth lanterns except Hal, then fans have a right to react, but if Hal wasn’t even one of the nominees of Feb 2015 COTM and his colleague was and wins, what does Hal have anything to do with John Stewart being the sole focus for four weeks. This makes me laugh.

  • Steve Rogers

Hey Desh, what do you think about the latest rumor about Chris Pine being selected for the role as Hal Jordan from the latino-review?

    • Desh Derringer

Well, of course, I don’t like it :p

El Mayimbe says it’s a “BIG if,” so it’s no confirmation. I do know that DC has “plans for John Stewart,” so I have a good feeling we will see him in the cinematic universe.

      • Steve Rogers

I’m just getting tired of DC using Hal Jordan on failed projects. They need to try something new for a change.

Also CBR contacted WB about it and they WB refused to comment on the rumors.

Some of this worries me. But this isn’t the first time that Chris Pine was rumored at the time.

I hope when they say DC have plans for John that would mean the DCCU and has nothing to do with the comics.

        • Desh Derringer

Well, I don’t think WB would say anything one way or the other. There’s really nothing we can do at this point but sit back and wait to see what happens. Just remember, it’s just a rumor and El Mayimbe wasn’t even sure of it.

          • Steve Rogers

You’re right. I’m sure it may not be true. Forbes released an article that disapproves Chris Pine playing Hal Jordan and they’re approving for John Stewart to play Green Lantern instead. You should put this up on your article.
