Green Lantern Corps #37 Darwyn Cooke Variant Cover

Darwyn Cooke Green Lantern Corps Variant

DC Comics’ variant covers for the December issues have been released, and as usual, there is a neat theme to them. This time, all the covers are illustrated by Darwyn Cooke. The Green Lantern Corps variant depicts a very awesome shot of John Stewart standing proudly at the head of the Corps. This is an excellent depiction of a PoC character. He looks strong, proud, and he’s front and center. I don’t like seeing them way in the back all the time, or presented as lesser than the other characters they’re around (see THIS image, which features a mangled Black character who is now a robot, surrounded by six other highly idealized White characters for an example of what not to do). What else is cool is that Katma Tui made it in the picture. It’s good to see her again!

You can view a larger image of the picture right here.

Oa, by the way

I always found these interviews with Darwyn Cooke to be entertaining and enlightening. He gives his thoughts on what is right and what is wrong with comics today.

I totally agree with your comments on that beautiful variant. I want characters of color to have that same power fantasy element as white characters–especially when it comes to premier characters of color.

Darwyn Cooke is an interesting guy, and I’ve liked his work for a long while. He makes a lot of valid points about the industry–I totally agree with what he says in those videos. The DCAU got that tone he was talking about. I don’t see why the current DCU isn’t more like that–at least GLC is though. 🙂

Finally, that GLC variant should be viewed with this in the background:

I listened to that while looking at the image, and yes that is a very appropriate theme. I am big fan of the Starship Troopers cartoon “Roughnecks” that came out years ago!

And yeah, one of the biggest triumphs of the DCAU is that it appealed to EVERYONE. It reached out to so many people. Young, old, people of different ethnic backgrounds… I believe that is the best incarnation of the DC Universe there has ever been, and the comics can still stand to learn a lot from it.

You guys brought back my childhood! Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles. Like many of my favorite 90’s cartoons (Gargoyles, Exo-Squad, Beast Wars, X-Men, The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, the entire DCAU) and a few ones from ’00 (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Samurai Jack, The Powerpuff Girls), they all have something in common — occasionally mature in tone and theme, yet written to be suitable for all ages. Just like writer/artist Darwyn Cooke said, that’s the kind of entertainment that the comic book industry needs to get back to.

        Good, good memories…

I love so many of those toons you mentioned, but when you listed Exo-Squad, my heart pounded extra hard in my chest out of excitement. I LOVE THAT SHOW!

Phaeton was a great villain but Marsala was my favorite. Kind of reminded me of a black guy. Like Sam ‘George’ Francisco from that movie, Alien Nation. Or Piccolo from DBZ.

    Awesome work Desh

Uh oh! / Fell in love again (love again)
What am I gonna tell my friends (tell all my friends)?
(Oops) It just happened / You walked in my door
I don’t wanna be alone no more
[Throws plant in pot through a door window]
Oops! I’ve done it! Told you how I feel.
I just hope this time that our love is real….

For just three episodes (and cameo appearances in four others) — BEST CHARACTER EVER!!

With the JL/JLU animated series, Bruce Timm, Dwayne McDuffie, and others crafted the BEST incarnation of the DC Universe there has ever been. That show introduced me to characters I’d never heard of, took good characters and made them great, and took joke characters and made them respectable again. Since so many characters on that show were depicted so fantastically well, it seems wrong to single any of them out… but I gotta say I developed a new level of admiration for The Flash because of that show. I’m not just talking about his obvious CMOA in ‘Divided We Fall’. He was simply badass. The fact that he was also the funniest, friendliest and most kindhearted person in the league was the cherry on top.

JL/JLU had huge mass appeal. I echo the sentiments of everyone who is glad that Bruce Timm is coming back to write, produce and direct more DC animated features.

Thanks for the Darwyn Cooke videos! I like his name, Darwyn (very intellectual). I also really like what he had to say in the second video too. He’s right about everything. About the industry. About digital. About how regular people are going to be the ones to save the medium.

“I want them to stop catering to the perverted needs of 45yr old men.” – Darwyn Cooke on what he would like to see DC or Marvel change about the way they do business.

    Serious truth right there.
