Chadwick Boseman Hints at Green Lantern John Stewart

Chadwick Boseman and Green Lantern

Blackfilm.com had the honor of discussing superheroes with 42 star Chadwick Boseman. In the discussion, unprompted, Boseman threw out the possibility of playing Green Lantern John Stewart. From Blackfilm.com:

CB: Let me put to you this way. If it’s character driven, I’ll do it. As long as it’s character driven, I would love to do it. If it’s just you in a suit and you with powers, then it doesn’t interest me, no matter how big it is. As long as it’s character driven, I’m totally into it. If they could figure out how to do Black Panther and make it fit the original or adapt to the times we’re in now and be new and innovative and be character driven and has the sense of what the comic book is supposed to be, but not bound by it, then yes, of course, I would want to do it.

As he finished speaking on the record, he asked if folks wanted to see a Black Panther film and I said yes. Then he asked, “What about Green Lantern?”

That’s very interesting. Chadwick Boseman would be impeccable casting for John Stewart!

By this point, I think it’s safe to say there is definitely talk of Green Lantern John Stewart behind the scenes. Too many people in the business have referenced the character, or have been rumored to be involved with the character. Let’s go down the list. First, Idris Elba specifically said he wants to play the character. Then, we heard rumors all over the internet saying that Denzel Washington was in talks to play the character. About a week after that, news of The Rock being in talks to play the character went viral and The Rock name dropped John Stewart repeatedly via social media. Now, Chadwick Boseman specifically references the character!

The buzz and rumors involving John Stewart have all been very encouraging and exciting, but I have to admit that I’m a tad weary. It’s not that I’m unhappy to hear about prospects of John Stewart appearing in film, but I’m ready for this matter to be put to rest.

I would just like to know if John Stewart is going to be the main Green Lantern in the DC Cinematic Universe. It’s worth noting that there have been no rumors regarding any other Green Lanterns, while the John Stewart rumors and references are rampant. Yet, nothing has been confirmed.

Keep an eye on GreenLantern.co for more news as it happens.

Oa, by the way

F*** YES!!! I really hope this is true. He was my original choice before the other John Stewart rumors started floating around. Great actor. Great look. Ideal age. I really hope this is true. WB is supposed to announce a new slate of movies soon too. My fingers are crossed, haha.

In their review for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Korey Coleman and Martin Thomas of DoubleToasted.com, formerly of Spill.com, discuss the need for heroes of color, like Green Lantern John Stewart, in the DC Cinematic Universe.

Just goes to show why the DCCU needs to have the same demographic appeal as the MCU.

I haven’t seen Winter Soldier yet (might go see it tomorrow). There definitely needs to be more heroes of color in the modern superhero film scene. I’ll be REALLY impressed when they get strong, leading roles.

John Stewart is such an obvious choice, it’s not even funny. Green Lantern is such a strong property with so much potential, and the audience is receptive to John Stewart. It makes TOO MUCH sense to use him. And yeah, Chadwick Boseman is perfect for the role. DC and WB needs to be working on this yesterday.

    Just saw The Winter Soldier.

The way Falcon is depicted is, in many ways, the way I do NOT want John Stewart depicted in a Justice League film, namely as the black sidekick who offers no competitive advantage and speaks only to lampshade his own inadequacy. This Falcon quote sums it up perfectly, “I do what [Captain America] does. Only slower.”

That said, it was nice to see two black heroes on screen at the same time. And I did enjoy the banter of those two guys in that video Hudson Faber posted.

CA:TWS was a decent movie but THE RAID 2: BERANDAL was the far superior action film, no contest.
